The Storyboard for My Digital Story
Previously, I shared the proposal for my digital story which is an application for the strategy in teaching kids through games and activities. So, today I’m sharing the storyboard for the digital story that represents the lesson. My goal in this digital story is the kindergarten and first grade English language learners to achieve the following standards in the language:
Demonstrate command of the conventions of
standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Capitalize
the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I
Recognize
and name end punctuation.
Spell
simple words phonetically, drawing on knowledge of sound-letter relationships.
§ Vocabulary
Acquisition and Use:
Determine or clarify the meaning of
unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on kindergarten reading
and content.
The descriptions:
An English Language Learners teacher, who
teaches her kids new vocabularies in English, but she uses a different technique
in teaching by applying an activity in the learning process, as an example of
the learning through games theory.
The lesson starts with
the teacher telling her student that they are going to make a cupcake.
The
Teacher: what do we need to make a cupcake?
They start brainstorming and thinking out loud about the required ingredients.
The
teacher: oil, eggs, milk, butter, flour, and water (the objects supported with
photos) to help the ELLs in understanding and making a connection between the
words and it’s meaning.
The teacher
asks for help: Who can help me?
Ahmed: Milk
Sarah: Eggs
Ehsan: Oil
Faisal: Water
Kinz: Flour
Jo: Butter
The
teacher asks the kids: Did we miss something?
They start thinking, and then the teacher gives them two
ingredients to choose “Salt or Sugar”.
They choose the salt. Therefore, the cupcake tastes
different and it is not good (they became very sad).
The teacher clarifies for the students that it is because
they choose the wrong ingredient “the salt”.
She claims
that it is not bad to make a mistake because we learn from our mistakes. Also,
today’s lessons are
1- It is very important to learn the
correct name of the objects to avoid the mistakes in the future
2- If there are two objects which look
similar to each other does not mean that they have the same functions.
After watching the digital story, I
am going to work with my kids and make our cupcake in the correct way. So, kids
are going to learn and memorize most of the English terms in the lesson.

I really like your story plot! I agree with you that teaching vocabulary for ELL students is very important! ELL students should also be exposed to non-academic vocabulary, such as basic ingredients to make a cupcake. I also like how you are going to have the kids make a cupcake as well after watching the video. That will really help them differentiate what the different ingredients are and help them apply what they learned. Good job! Very creative :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good outline! My advice is to use less sentences on your physical slides and maybe record yourself narrating instead. But you should definitely keep the necessary vocabulary in text boxes. I cannot wait to see your finished product!
