Popplet?!
Last week reading introduced to us many
technological tools that help in analyzing the data and connecting the
information and ideas. One of the interested graphic organizing tools is
Popplet, which has two different way of accessing it a website and an app.
Popplet is a technological tool that holds a diversity of graphic organizing
samples. It is the area where a teacher or a student starts the creativity in
organizing their thought or studies. I enjoy discovering Popplet website and I
found it very useful in many ways. For example, a teacher might ask students to
analyze their understanding of an article to be able to assess the student
comprehension level. Also, an English Language Learners teacher may ask the
students to analyze the new word and connect it with the diversity of meaning
that would apply under the same word. In addition, I notice that this tool
could be one of the best tools for teachers to apply some of the language
standards in the lesson plan, such as
Determine or clarify the
meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 5
reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
Use context (e.g.,
cause/effect relationships and comparisons in text) as a clue to the meaning of
a word or phrase.
Use common,
grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of
a word (e.g., photograph, photosynthesis).
Consult reference materials
(e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find
the pronunciation and determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and
phrases.
Demonstrate understanding
of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.
Interpret figurative
language, including similes and metaphors, in context.
Recognize and explain the
meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs.
Use the relationship
between particular words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms, homographs) to better
understand each of the words.
Additionally, Popplet is a flexible and
an easy tool to deal with. There are many options starting from the background
color to the small details and how you would be able to tag a name and add a
text, image, or draw. Teachers
and students will love to use Popplet.
