Most 21-century teachers’ agreed in the
super strength of learning through games. Butler, a professional teacher in
teaching primary school kids, said, “Through joyful, healthy play, children
begin a love of learning and prepare for life itself,” which mean learning
through play would help kids to succeed in life. That’s why as teachers we need
to be aware of the most popular education games. Also, it is necessary to make
sure that the game has a goal, which matches the lesson goal. Looking to the
websites, there are a diversity of pages that support learning through games
but not all of them are useful. Public Broadcasting Service (Pbskids.org) page
is a highly recommended tool for learning through interactive games. There are
a diversity of interactive games related to many subjects like reading,
speaking, and listening. For example, the rhyming game helps kids to recognize
the similar rhythm between to different words. Moreover, there is a part for videos,
which help in improving the listening skill. Also, there are many other
interactive activities like drawing, coloring, and reading stories.
Additionally, it is a website that increased the opportunity for students to
use the four C’s, Communication, Creativity, Critical thinking, and
Collaboration. Moreover, going through the activities in Pbskids.org considered
as a great supporter of the following standard:
§
SL.3.2-Determin
the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information
presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and
orally.
§
SL.3.5-Create
engaging audio recording of stories or poems that demonstrate fluid reading at
an understanding pace; add visual displays when appropriate to emphasize or
enhance certain facts or details.
Determine
or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning word and phrases based
on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
Use
sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
Determine
the meaning of the new word formed when a known affix is added to a known word
(e.g., agreeable/disagreeable, comfortable/uncomfortable, care/careless,
heat/preheat).
Use a
known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root
(e.g., company, companion).
Use
glossaries or beginning dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or
clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases.
I believe that Pbskds.org is a very
valuable resource for kids especially the English Language Learners (ELLs) as
it has a unique feature on it, which is the interactive games that match the
kid's famous characters. Therefore, students are going to learn and enjoy
learning at the same time, which is a reason to encourage them to learn the
language and go over the difficulties an ELLs might have while learning
English. I recommend teachers especially ELLs teachers, and parents for an ELL
to introduce this great website to their kids. They are going to love the
learning processes and succeed.
